U San Hlaing was a successful Artist in the commercial art world by drawing advertising signboards and flags at his own shop on 27th Street in Yangon in 1963-64. I studied at U San Hlaing’s and gave my helping hand to his work for about one year. I was very satisfied at that time and we were working together I studied the use of the compass and the technique of design too. I got 3 Kyats per day.
In that period sayargyi U Ngwe Gyaing often came to his house. He was a very successful artist by creating dyeing and printing textiles the seals of Yinmar bodices and longies, slipper designs, and film posters. The poster boards were 15’ x 20’. At that time, U San Hlaing and U Ba Yin Glay were drawing the PwintKaungfishsoup seals together in harmony, one of the most famous advertising designs in all is “champion “Slipper Advertising Design. That is depicted as the elephant pulling the leather rope of the slipper. This painting was very famous in the public.
Then he entered into the magazine cover world and painted. U San Hlaing is patient and he did his work hard. He draws the sketch of line and ink sketch drawing. He has looked after his family, dutifully until now.
He called the artists who have helped with his works, to Buddha Gaya. Sayargyi is not greedy and satisfied with his fee for his work, because he is religious pious virtuous.
